Texting

Young people use abbreviations and acronyms to communicate more quickly via text messaging and other forms of electronic chatting. At times these shortcuts can be as confusing as a foreign language, especially to parents.  Could your child be hiding a conversation right in front of your eyes?  Do you know the lingo?

Internet Safety for Kids

Tips on keeping safe while chatting, IMing & more.

Like real life, on the Internet the more information someone has about you, the more they can use that information to find out where you live.  Not everyone on the Internet is a friend.  Some people are very dangerous.

1. Never answer personal questions
2. Never tell anyone when you are home alone
3. Never post pictures of yourself on the Internet
4. Only dowload pictures, gamec, and infomration that your parents say is okay
5. Never arrange a face-to-face meeting alone with anyone you've met on the Internet
6. Tell your parents if an online friend wants to get together, so they know about it.

Home Security

Important Tips:

Outdoor Safety:

1.  If you plan to be away, make it appear as if someone is home
2.  Keep landscaping open and short enough to offer no hiding places
3.  Install outdoor lighting to shine on key areas.
4.  Make sure all entrances and parking areas are well lit.
5.  Don't leave notes about where you are or when you'll return
6.  Keep an up to date household inventory list

Signs of a Break-In:

-  A cut or removed screen
-  A broken window
-  A door left open
-  Items in disarray or moved
-  A noise that sounds like someone breaking into or moving around your home

If you are in the house:

-  Do not confront the burglar
-  Try to get out of the house
-  Lock yourslef in a room (with a phone)
